At 1,000 acres (or 16,000 tennis courts or about 9 Vatican cities) Farnborough International Airshow, which has been running for over 65 years, is one of the UK’s biggest and best known outdoor shows. 

Taking place biennially in mid July, the event brings together the entire aerospace industry for a week of networking and deal-making, which culminates in spectacular air-shows for the public at the end of the week.  The air show welcomes over 1,500 exhibitors and an incredible 73,000 visitors and, this year, generated an order-book of over $124 billion, despite closing early on the first day due to heavy rainfall.

DB Event Networks has worked with the organisers for over twenty years, and has provided the connectivity infrastructure at the event since 2010, responding to ever-increasing demand for bandwidth each year. 

The team installs site-wide internet and telecommunications infrastructure, enabling exhibitors, press, security, ticketing and visitors to stay connected during the show.  The completed network delivers VoIP telephony in addition to general internet connectivity and blanket coverage Wi-Fi in the halls for visitors. The network needed to be designed to manage extremely large upload requirements in the press areas, to facilitate high res image uploads from 1,500 international press, in addition to live video streaming of the air shows.

With more than 130 miles of cable across the 1,000 acre site, 3GB of internet connectivity, hundreds of VoIP telephones and thousands of internet connections, installing, managing and supporting the network for this event is an incredibly complex job.  Parts of the install start a full 12 months out from the show, and we have invested in permanent cabling at the site to enable us to better service exhibitors needs. 

From 6 weeks out, we have a crew of 20 rising to 50 in the busy few weeks before the event. During the open period, the team monitor the system continuously from the control centre and use golf buggies to respond to any on-site issues quickly.
